My Angel
I see you soaring
In my dreams tonight.
But when I take
A closer look
My Devil
You turn out to be.

I was digging around on the internet this afternoon and remembered that I had posted a bunch of poems that I wrote in high school and college to a site called poetry.com. There was actually more there than I had remembered, but one in particular that I had been looking for in old papers for some time. I'm going to save that one for another day, but thought that I would share one little gem tonight. Enjoy!

1000 page views in less than a month! The official launch date of the site was June 18th and here we are on July 10th with over 1000 visits to the site. Thank you again for your support. I promise that you will not be disappointed.
Next task is to get people to "Like" the Outermountain Writing Facebook page. If you've already done so, please invite your friends to join in. My goal there is to get 50 likes by the end of July. Only 38 more to go. I got to thinking as I was looking through my book list of things I've read this year. I set the goal for myself to read a book per month this year and I have done so, but "cheated" a bit by reading some "easier" books in there. So I ask the question, what counts as reading a book when you're an adult? Back in elementary school, I could read a short chapter book under 100 pages and get credit for the reading contests we had. In high school, we had backpacks full of text books and were assigned reading from each one, but never really read them cover to cover. In college as an English major, I did have to read most of my books cover to cover. Some I enjoyed and others I labored through just so that I might be able to make a few intelligent points in class discussion. So does it count when I read a kids book today? Obviously I wouldn't count reading a picture book. I wouldn't really count the beginning readers that we're working on with Joshua lately. But does the Tin Tin book count? What about the John Maxwell '101' books? Those are each under 100 pages and read in a few days, but decidedly geared towards adults. What are your thoughts on when a book should count towards a reading goal? Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings. Therefore, when I heard that they were making a film version of The Hobbit, I was of course super excited to see that. Peter Jackson posted this poster for the film on his Facebook page over the weekend and I found the following picture on The Hobbit Blog as well. At least they have a sense of humor about things.
I just got an email this afternoon from the organizers of the Airport 5K race that I ran a few weeks ago at the Rochester International Airport. It was the second time that I ran the race and it was tons of fun. I'm in the video that they posted on YouTube with clips from the event (about 0:22 into the video I'm the only idiot wearing long pants for a race that's entirely on blacktop in the middle of June). There are some cool shots of the race. Another excerpt.
Let me just say to everyone that has been visiting the site, THANK YOU! Every time I see that there are new people visiting, it continues to inspire me to keep writing and posting to keep you coming back. Please share with your friends and keep coming back for more as I am trying to stay on top of updating the site at least once a day, especially here on the blog. That being said, on to the excerpt from a story. Please post your comments with guesses on which of the five senses this story centers around. The shuffling sound was unmistakable as Grandma made her way to the bedroom mumbling something under her breath about “kids these days” and “do it yourself.” When she reached the door, Grandma started carving a path through the boxes on the floor like a jungle guide wielding a machete. Boxes went flying over the bed and through the open closet door revealing the worn down carpet beneath. Alex was still standing by the nightstand, not daring to move a muscle, when Grandma arrived. Grandma yanked open the drawer of the nightstand with enough force to rattle the junk on top. The items tottered back and forth for a moment and then settled back into their spots on the nightstand. Grandma looked down at the open drawer and then up to stare at Alex. Alex had already seen the glasses in the bottom of the drawer and she slowly brought her eyes to meet Grandma’s. I was thinking back to my last big reading project today and realized that it left me hungry and wanting more. I say that with intended irony as the books that I'm referring to are none other than the Hunger Games trilogy.
I had set a goal for myself this year. I happened to do it at New Year's, but it was not a resolution mind you. It was a goal. The goal was to read at least one book per month through the entire year. We've just moved into month number seven, and I'm happy to report that I'm on my seventh book of the year. Suzanne Collins's books were number 2, 3, and 5 on my list so far. You might be asking yourself, "self, why would he only want to read one book per month?" And you'd be asking yourself a very appropriate question. But let me remind you. I have two kids at home and a full time job. I don't have all day to sit around and read. So I get a few minutes on my lunch break some days, a few minutes lying in bed before I fall asleep and if I'm really into a book (ahem...Mockingjay) I might be forced to stay up until 2:00 in the morning to finish it. I set the goal of one book per month full well knowing that I have limited time to actually spend reading things that I want to read. If I had set a goal of one book per week, I'd be about 20 weeks behind by now and would be thoroughly discouraged. But by actually getting through six books in six months, I feel encouraged and feel like I've accomplished something. I'm not going to give any kind of spoilers for the books I'm reading, but I think I am going to occasionally post about the book(s) that I'm reading on here. Hopefully it will give you some insight as to where my inspiration for my own writing comes from. Happy 4th of July everyone. Take a moment today to remember what today is all about and celebrate all those who came before us and sacrificed their lives for the freedoms that we have in this country.
I posted an interesting question on the Outermountain Writing Facebook page the last night. If you had a choice, which of the five senses would you give up? After I posted it, I spent a good 5 minutes thinking through my own answer before making a selection. There are certainly things about each sense that I wouldn't want to live without, but some overpowered others after a little deliberation. Hop over to the Facebook page to cast your vote.
Based on my last post, I've decided to write more about Jackson. I started writing a story last night...the story of Jackson.
I am hoping that it will help me face my last remaining fear in life and allow Jackson's legacy to grow and continue on for all time. |
